Inappropriate urination refers to cats presenting for urination outside of the litter box, either on surfaces that are horizontal such as beds and floors, or for vertical surfaces such as walls. Some owners even see things such as blood or crystals in the urine.

The inability to urinate is most common in male cats because of their long and narrow urethras. However, its possible to see this issue in female cats as well. Cats who are unable to urinate may vocalize loudly, frequently lick their genital region, or visit the litter box repeatedly.

Elimination problems involve a decreased ability (or an inability) to urinate; causes include blockage by stones, crystals, mucus plugs, or growths; muscle problems; and nervous system problems.
